gifted program for kids

every year... the p3s will take a test to see if they qualify for the gifted program......children will take a super high level english paper together with a maths paper.... on a saturday that is.... then if they pass round one.... they sit for round 2... if they pass round 2 they have the option to transfer to schools like tao nan, rosyth etc etc....

so.... we give out consent forms for parents to allow/disallow their kids to take this test.....

my fav kid in the class happens to be the smartest.... not that i like him coz he's the smartest.... but because he really amuses me.... a lot of teachers dislike him coz they think he's arrogant and rude.... i feel that he's a bill gates in the making.... who needs PR when you can hire PR?

i've never thumbed him down in class and i allow him to correct my grammatical errors.... i took him aside one day and talked to him... i told him about his attitude... of course he sees nothing wrong with that... he was like...."why can't i ask questions? i just want to clarify if the teacher made a mistake.... so that i know whether i made a mistake too" ...

alwyn teaches my class science.... one day he decided to drift a little away from the topic and talk about his lasik surgery.... so my fav kid put up his hand and said "can you stick to the syllabus? we're running out of time".... alwyn got pissed of course... so he argued back "don't you think it's boring if i only teach from the textbook?" my kid replied " of course it's more interesting but you should talk about things related to the syllabus... we're not learning anything now related to eyes" heh heh.... i can't help but agree with him... but still.....

so i chided the kid for that.... he folded his arms and asked me..." ok if you were me... how would you have put it across to mr tan?"

he's only 9 years old.... i can't help but worry that my kids might turn out like this.... not that i am super intelligent or what but it is in my kids' dad's and mom's genes to be defiant and rebellious..... it dusen help that their uncle and aunt (alfie and xian) is the same too....

he dussen think he's right all the time.... he allows me to correct his mistakes too.... he will just go...."oh yah... silly me.." and get on with life.... so i wonder... why can't we adults do the same too......so i would say arrogant is not the world.... it's lack of PR....anyway... almost the entire class wants to go for the test..... cept for a few.... i would say it's very wise of their parents... coz i know these kids will never pass the test... not that i don't give them a chance.... but i'm their teacher... i know where their abilities lie.....

my colleague was just commenting that it's almost full house for her class.... she happened to teach the potential EM3 kids.... i've marked their exams.... 3 / 100 kind.... at P3 you that those kinda results.... the parents should consider special school for the intellectually disabled.... not sign up for gifted program.... but still we're not allowed to insult parents so we allow them to take the test....

anyway that's not my point..... my point is that my fav kid decided he dussen want to go for the test.... i was like WHAT?!!!

the entire class was shocked to silence.... i was like "WHY DON'T YOU WANT TO TAKE THE TEST?!!"

"too much of a hassle...."

"why isit a hassle?!!!"

"if i don't pass... i waste my saturday.... if i pass... the schools are too far away.... i just transferred here... then i need to waste money again buying a new set of uniform and change school....lose lose situation.... no point..."

"but then the school here don't offer gifted programs.. don't you want a more challenging and interesting time in school? rather than learn what you already know?"

"we take the same psle paper right?"

can you believe i'm talking to a 9 year old..... i called his parents and they said he insisted he didn't want to take the paper... he even quarrelled with them.....

now that is what i call gifted.....
